On 31 October March 2019 the United Kingdom (UK) will leave the EU, as the situation currently stands, without a deal and without a transition period. Dirkzwager’s Brexit team keeps a close eye on the developments.

The result of the British general elections on 12 December 2019 made it clear that the United Kingdom will be leaving the EU on 31 January 2020. There will now be a transition phase which, in principle, will last until 1 January 2021 and during which phase all EU rules and laws will remain in force for the UK. Due to the complex negotiations still to be conducted on future trade relations, it is possible that this transition period is extended, possibly even until 1 January 2023. However, the question is whether British Prime Minister Johnson wants this. It should be borne in mind that many aspects still depend on the outcome of the aforementioned negotiations between the EU and Great Britain. In terms of outcome, many variants are conceivable. These agreements must subsequently be approved by the EU countries, the British parliament and the European parliament. If that does not happen (in time), this will result in a so-called no-deal Brexit.

Regardless of the way in which the UK withdraws from the EU, Brexit will have far-reaching consequences for doing business between the Netherlands and the UK The Brexit team of Dirkzwager are following the developments closely.
