About Louis Houwen
Biography
Louis Houwen graduated with distinction in Dutch Law from Radboud University Nijmegen and obtained a doctorate at the same univeristy with a comparative law study into the position of creditors of affiliated companies. He has worked as a lawyer in corporate and healthcare law since 1993 and became a partner at Dirkzwager in Nijmegen and Arnhem. Louis mainly advises healthcare and welfare organisations, housing associations and their sector organisations in the areas of corporate structures, governance and liability matters and the development of private initiatives.

Secondary activities
With effect from 1 January 2011, Tilburg University appointed Louis Houwen as a distinguished professor in public-private enterprise law at the TiasNimbas Business School. In this position, Louis will research the legal aspects of social enterprise. Private organisations in the semi-public sector, such as healthcare and welfare organisations, housing associations and educational institutions are profiling themselves more and more as enterprises with a social purpose. They use market mechanisms to better organise their public service provision. Louis will research the foundations of social enterprise and the legal entity and governance models of enterprises with public tasks. The aim is to contribute to legal theory and the operationalisation of new governance models for good governance, professional supervision, stakeholder involvement and social responsibility. This research will take place in the multi-disciplinary setting of the Centre for Governance of Social Enterprises (CBMO) of the TiasNimbas Business School.
