Tax law: solving complex puzzles with real impact

Cuno studied in Groningen and began his career in 1995 at Loyens Loeff, then still known as Loyens & Volkmaars. In 2018, he joined Dirkzwager together with the tax team from the firm's former Oosterbeek office.

As a tax lawyer, Cuno focuses on the corporate practice with a particular emphasis on larger family-owned businesses: business and estate planning, business transfers and restructurings , often in combination with governance matters. All of this in close collaboration with the civil-law notaries and attorneys who work together at Dirkzwager. "It may sound like a cliché, but the real added value lies in integrated advice, taking the broadest possible view of a client's opportunities, options and challenges."

Strengthening collaboration in a changing market

One of Cuno's priorities as a board member will be deepening internal collaboration and strengthening our full-service proposition externally. "We already do this very well, but there is significant room to grow. The strength of our firm lies above all in delivering high-quality, technically rigorous services in an informal, pragmatic way."

At the same time, Cuno is candid about the challenges facing the profession. Technology is reshaping the market fast, meanwhile regulatory pressure has also grown exponentially. These two developments are now converging. Clients are asking sharper and more complex questions. Expectations are going up on every front. This means the legal industry also need to rethink how they train and develop their employees: with more emphasis on technical skills and sector knowledge, but also interpersonal skills.

For Cuno joing the board feels like both an honour and a responsibility. "It's a real compliment to be asked, but it also feels like a natural next step after my roles as section head and member of the advisory board."
